Iron ochre is a reddish, muddy deposit caused by naturally occurring bacterial activity in the iron found in the soil and groundwater. When these bacteria are highly concentrated, they create a reddish gel.
The ochre deposits that stick onto the interior and exterior walls of the drain and on the water entry of the sump pump hinders pump performance and clogs the drain, which will cause water infiltration and excessive humidity in the basement.
Iron ochre is not a health hazard in itself, except that mould growth caused by moisture can lead to indoor air quality problems and become a health hazard.
A Diligence Inspection technician can take samples and have them monitored by an accredited laboratory.
The laboratory carries out the analysis of iron ochre, in accordance with proven and recognized methods:
Only a laboratory test can confirm the presence or absence of bacteria, and determine drain clogging potential.
