Asbestos is a fibrous rock used in the manufacturing of several composites, including insulation. Asbestos has been used in construction for its insulating properties. It can be found in the water heaters, insulation, fireplaces, steam and hot water pipes, tiles, vermiculite, and air heating conducts.
When a material containing asbestos deteriorates, asbestos fibers are released into the air. This is when asbestos may become hazardous to health. This problem usually occurs especially during maintenance, renovation or demolition.
The danger of asbestos fibers usually depends on their concentration in the air, the duration of exposure, the size of the fibers and the frequency of exposure.
If inhaled in large quantities, asbestos fibers can cause asbestosis (lung scarring that restricts breathing), mesothelioma (cancer of the chest wall...) and/or lung cancer.
A Diligence Inspection technician may take samples for analysis by an accredited laboratory to detect asbestos fibers, as well as follow-up with the lab for results.
