Vermiculite is mainly used for insulating attics, and sometimes in wall insulation as well. "The potential risk to health associated with the vermiculite that was sold under the brand name Zonolite Attic Insulation and possibly other brands in Canada, has raised concerns recently. This is the ore in question; taken from the Libby Mine in Montana (before it closed in the 1990s) could contain small amounts of asbestos.
Vermiculite is a mica-like mineral mined around the world. It is lightweight and has good insulation and fire retardant properties. Vermiculite insulation bulk is brown, gray and brown and looks like diametrical stones between 2 to 10 millimeters".1
Only a laboratory analysis can detect the presence of asbestos. It is recommended to analyze vermiculite before finalizing a real estate transaction, because insulation that contains asbestos proves to be a major problem that will result in significant expenditures.
If you think your home or building is insulated with vermiculite, do not hesitate to contact us.
A Diligence Inspection technician can take samples, which will be analyzed by an accredited laboratory for detecting asbestos fibre, as well as make the necessary follow-up with the laboratory until you receive the result.
